Poll Workers – election judges,
election auditors – are the “face of HAVA”
to the voting public. Although the November 2006 deadline for compliance with HAVA has passed, Poll Workers are a long way from comfortable with the new equipment, new systems,
and new procedures.
Much of the post-election media coverage in recent years has focused on the need for more and better Poll Worker training. Poll Worker training is seen as the key to avoid long
lines, mistakes, and reduced public confidence in the voting
process and stated results. This
was the intent of Congress when they funded Poll Worker
training in the Help America Vote Act.
HAVA Partners will work closely with client states and
counties to provide Poll Workers with a dynamic, customized
training program that will:
- ensure statewide uniformity of elections administration
- reduce mistakes by increasing Poll Worker knowledge
- reduce training costs; and
- recruit new Poll Workers comfortable with the new
equipment and the technology used in post-HAVA election
administration.
Web-based, online instruction is increasingly the medium
of choice for training and instructional needs in business,
government and academia. Students and workers--especially
those juggling job, family, and community commitments--appreciate
the flexibility online training offers. Moreover, they
are increasingly expecting it.
